Kougoed meaning something to chew. This plant has been used by hunter-gatherers as a mood-altering substance from prehistoric times. Indigenous to South Africa, Kougoed is still recognised as a mood enhancer and sedative. It is a small, succulent perennial shrub that flowers between July and September. Sceletium tortuosum is one of eight species and the only one used for its commerical exploits.
