Botanical Name
Arctium lappa

Also known as Beggar’s buttons, lappa, cuckoo button. Flapper-bags, bardana, clotburr, gipsy’s rhizome

Burdock is a short biennial which grows up to 1m in height.  The leaves are generally large, coarse and ovate (similar to rhubarb). They are woolly underneath. The Arctium species generally flower from July through to October. Burdock’s prickly heads, also known as burrs, were the inspiration for Velcro and provide an excellent device for seed dispersal. Burdock has been used as a treatment for skin conditions such as eczema.
