Botanical Name
Asparagus officinalis

Also known as sparrow grass and sperage

This perennial can grow up to 1.8m. Its ‘spears’ grow into stems which bear fine needles. In summer it gets white flowers and the female plants bear red berries in the autumn months. Asparagus is used as a vegetable. Medicinally it is used as a laxative (tea brewed from established ferns). It has also been used to treat rheumatic and urinary disorders. The seeds can be sown in the spring. Asparagus is a useful companion plant for tomatoes. The tomato plant repels the asparagus beetle.
